You are correct , it is only the grouped listings that work in this manner.
However it is possible to purchase or code roll up web parts that will allow
content from lists in say Team sites to appear in a master list in the
portal. Corasworks makes such a web part and I am sure some Coders out there
will shed some light on what code you can use to create your own. This is
one link that has some code that may help you out.
