it is absolutely unknown as to why the sharepoint portal db got
installed as a MSDE instance in the first place.

Actually...would it be possible if you can elaborate on the procedure
on reconfigure SP to point to the right database server. It is
expected that the database will still reside on the physical server,
but i'm not sure which databases do i need to move (SITE, PROF, SERV)
and other ones?? Also what are the steps required on the Portal Server
Central Administration to allow this to happen?? (right now I think
only modify the server but not the individual database instance.
