Editing files in Office 2K environments

Hi,
About the solutions for enabling the "Edit in...." functionality in
clients with Office 2K installed:
At this moment the only solution I have is using the explorer view of
the document libraries. However in this view all metadata (thus
grouping, filtering, sorting actions) are lost, so it is quite an
uncomfortable and confusing way for users to work with their documents.
I have read from other post the following approach (I tried it without
success):
"There is a Client software on the SharePoint installation CD that will
allow
Office 2K to open document by the edit in word function on the document
workspace edit menu. Just install the "Client for Microsoft Office
SharePoint
Portal Server2003" on your clients. Then users with office 2k will have
the
same mode to edit the documents that is implemented in Office 2003. "
Has anyone tried this?
