Did what you have suggested but still without any luck.
The IIS server is part of the domain, and i have made the domain user local
administrator as well as network administrator for trouble shot. And i have
added the user in the Sharepoint administrator group.

I am able to create completely new databases on the remote server, so it
proves the domain account i am using has a trust relationship with the remote
SQL server. but when i tried to connnect the existing databases, still same
error message. getting a bit desperate here...
