Re: Backup/Restore for WSS or SPS?

Meggie:

I have just gone through a very difficult restore problem and worked
extensively with MS Product support on this, so I think I can give you a
very clear explanation.

1. Both WSS and SPS store all data in a SQL database. SPS is built on WSS
and extends the configdb and the sites db.
2. Both WSS and SPS backups using SQL server are supported by Microsoft.
3. Both WSS and SPS have backup tools. (stsadmin.exe and spsbackup.exe)
4. While SPS can be restored from SQL backups alone, there are certain
GUID's that are written in both the configdb and the sites db, which must
match. Under certain circumstances these GUID's may be out of sync, making
it impossible to restore from the SQL backup.
5. Therefore, Microsoft **RECOMMENDS** using spsbackup for backup and
restore of portal sites. In addition to backing up the SQL db's, spsbackup
also writes a manifest file and insures that everything is in sync.

The restore process from SQL server when this sync failure occurs in very
painful and I highly recommend that you work on automating the spsbackup
procudure.
