Backup/Restore for WSS or SPS?

Dear all,

Please shed me some lights on the different between backup/restore for WSS
and backup/restore for SPS Portal Server. I am very confusing here. It seems
to me backup/restore for WSS is exactly the same as backup/restore for SPS.
According to Microsoft articles that using SQL backup/restore is only good
for WSS, why only for WSS? It can restore my SPS portal site very well using
SQL backup/restore tool. I am confused now; please educate me a little bit
here the different on both kinds of BACKUP/RESTORE
