Backup and purge Sharepoint Document Library

Hi
I am running Sharepoint Portal 2003. Currently the database is running on
the same machine as the server.
I have a problem. I am running out of hard disk space and I want to archive
and purge old documents out of the storage.
What is the best practice to do so?
Thanks

Regards
Vivian
