Hi Martyn,
I am trying your solution but I am facing some problems... maybe you
can help me. The complete steps I am doing in a test server are:
- restore Sharepoint Services SQL backups (configuration and content
DB's). I am keeping the same DB name in a diferent server.
- install IIS (with the same options of the product server);
- create an application pool using the IIS backup file from product
server;
- install WSS 2.0 SP1 (same version) with remotesql=yes;
- choose the Application pool as you said; *** KEY STEP ***
- restart IIS;
- on the configuration database page I am choosing CANCEL but is not
going ahead, keep asking the configuration DB and I can not open the
menu page. So, I put the new server name and the configuration
database name and checking th box use a existent database;
- after that I can extent the virtual server but I can not open a new
Sharepoint to work on it to recover the file I need.

what I am doing wrong ?
