Sharepoint Site creation failure

I created a new site on my SPS server, but it did not configure properly (I'm
not certain why at this point). I then deleted the site in an attempt to
start again, but the site still shows up in the Manage Portal Sites list.
When I select Delete Site, i get the following error:
Cannot open database requested in login 'SITENAMEPo1_SITE'. Login fails.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'.
Additionally, I have removed the virtual server from IIS for this site, and
I noticed that I can still see it's information in the SQL Enterprise
Manager. I am wondering whether it is safe to begin to delete references and
databases listed in the SQL Enterprise Manager without adversly effecting the
remaining SPS sites on this server. Thank yo uin advance for any assistance
which can be offered!
