Unfortunately Word (and friends) create a separate connection to open the file and hence with Basic Auth require a second login. The only other workaround I have seen was to keep Word open all the time, once you login the first time you will not be prompted again.

Hi Everyone,
This KB article describes our issue *perfectly*:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;871155
The problem is the suggested solution will not work for us because our
deployment is on our extranet so we cannot use Integrated Windows
authentication. Integrated Windows authentication cannot be passed through
web proxies and many of our customers accessing the sites are behind proxy
servers. Are there any other solutions that use only Basic Authentication?
Thanks!
