Instances of webparts are all independent, the only way to pass information
is by using webpart connections, or by sharing static settings in
web.config.

A good example to look at is the Business ScoreCard Acceelrator from
Microsoft. It uses a customised site to design a scorecard and then a suite
of interacting webparts to display this content.
