Search returns no results after SQL restore

I hope someone can help with this one.

I have been testing disaster recovery scenarios and have tried the
following test but have hit an issue with searching.

1. Backup the prof, site and serv databases use SQL backup
2. Copied .bak files to another (destination) server and restored the
databases
3. Installed Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 on destination server
4. Restored the site and connected to the restored profile, serv and
site databases
5. All the content is restored intact except that searching returns
no results
from documents

I have tried rebuilding the Portal_Content and Non_Portal_Content
indexes. Both say that documents were indexed but when I search again
I get no results.
I have tried logging the successful indexing of documents but when I
search for a document which has been apparently indexed correctly
there are no results.

The database is SQL Server 2000, SP3a.

The only full text catalog I have found in the three databases resides
in the SITE database and when I try and do a rebuild of it (should I
need to do this?) I get messages in the event log to the effect of
'loading the filter failed with error 0x1' for all document types in
my database (doc, xls, pdf etc). I have hunted around on Microsoft
and newsgroups for a resolution for this error and I have found
references to installing MSSQL SP3 (done that) and changing the
registry (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323040)
to limit threads to 1 (done that) and increase the memory (done that)
and nothing seems to solve it.

Hope you can help.
