Hi Harry, last night I did almost exactly that and -- miraculously!!! - it
worked....needless to say I was quite nervous. My exact procedure was this,
however, if anyone else ever needs to do this:
1. Do the SPS Backup
2. Shut off all the components in the server topology
DON'T CLOSE THIS BROWSER WINDOW!
3. Detach the config database - just clear the connections if there are
still some left over
4. COPY (don't move in case it goes south) the config database from A to B
5. Attach the configuration DB to server B.
6. Back in the browser, connect to the new configuration database.
7. Delete the portal site in your configuration (just go with it, I know
it's scary) after connecting to configuration DB on B.
8. Reattach the components in server topology (wed, search, index, etc.) as
they were.
9. Perform a full restore to your new configuration databased database
server.
10. Bingo bango!
Good luck everyone, thanks Harry for getting me started down that path.

the virtual server for install. But, you re-created the config db, the
virtual server setting lost. Anyway...
