Thank you for the authoritive answer Steven, I was starting to think it was such a dumb question no one would answer it and after trying to link the web parts a thousand ways feel better about the wasted time.

Follow up. All the "help" data indicates that I should be able to sort rows in one Web Part with a connection to another. Even though the menu item indicates "Filter or Sort" my results are only the "Filter" capability, and no sorting takes place.

Are my expectiations of Web Part Connections once again too high? If I could use the "concatenate function" on a lookup column I would have a solution but the program won't let me use that function with the column.
