Not sure what's going on but what you've described initially sounds like you
did the rigth thing. The way I solved this was to create a new site group
and provide these essential permissions (among others) at the portal level,
Add Items - Add items to lists, add documents to SharePoint document
libraries, add Web Discussion comments
Edit Items - Edit items in lists, edit documents in SharePoint document
libraries, and customize Web Part Pages in SharePoint document libraries
Delete items from a list, documents from a document library, and Web
discussion comments in documents
Add a test user account to this new group and give it a whirl. I just did
testing on this very same thing today and it works as I would expect. Users
are able to add/edit/delete their own listings/doc/etc, but not other
people's. I also have Area approval on so there is a small training issue
in that when a user publishes a listing to an area, their listing doesn't
show up after they've added it (unless they're in Edit mode for the page, vs
View Page). Listings pending approval will be designated with a special
icon.
HTH.
