edit/delete items in a list w/o granting Manage Area

My users would like to give Contributors the ability to
Add, Edit and Delete items in a list. I access site
settings I grant all three permissions to the Contributor
role. But the result is the Contributors can add an item
but cannot edit or delete. To give them the ability to
edit and delete I must grant the Contributor the ability
to Manage Area.

The dilemma is the following - my users wish to grant
Contributors the ability to add, edit and delete items in
a list without giving them permissions to Manage Area.
Manage area permission when granted results in having the
ability to Mange Portal Site.

Without the edit and delete capability content publishing
will be a nightmare, but at the same time Manage Area is
too powerful.

Am I missing something obvious?? Can I give permissions
to add, edit and delete without granting Manage Area
permissions. I have not been able to set permissions to
achieve what my users want. I am not a developer, I'm a
PM and BA so the answer could be right under my nose and
I cannot see it.
If you can offer any guidance or recommendations it would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Patt

The scenario I am facing is described in the following KB
article:

Knowledge Base Article - 842678

You do not have the appropriate rights to editing listing
TitleOfListing.

You do not have the appropriate rights to delete listing
TitleOfListing.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs because only users who have
the "Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties for an
area on the portal site" permission to a portal area can
edit or delete a listing in a portal area. If a user does
not have the "Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties
for an area on the portal site" permission, the user can
add and view a listing in a portal area, but the user
cannot edit or delete the listing. By default, members of
the Web Designer site group and members of the Content
Manager site group have the "Manage Area - Delete or edit
the properties for an area on the portal site"
permission.

WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, add the users who you want
to permit to edit and delete listings in the portal area
to either the Web Designer site group or to the Content
Manager site group. Alternatively, assign the "Manage
Area - Delete or edit the properties for an area on the
portal site" permission to the user.
