Portal Area or WSS site?

This is in continuation of my earlier question on
targeting content. To summarize, we want to target
content to customer from our WSS sites. Customer will be
accessing their content via Extranet.

One possible solution is to target content from a site to
the portal area meant for the customer. Now the basic
question -- Area and Site can have almost the same
components like document library, lists, discussion
forum, survey, etc. Which one is better for customer,
particulary the customer should see only the targetted
content, with some additional collaboration components.
And is it possible to setup just the URL of the customer
area on an extranet?

Thanks for your help,
Navaneethan
