Problem restoring Sharepoint Portal Server 2001

We had a server crash the other day, and I've been attempting to
restore the Sharepoint system. We started with the trial version, and
upgraded to the full version shortly after. No service packs were
ever applied. The base platform is Windows 2000 Advanced Server, SP4.
It's a clean install. No virus scanners. An early version of
Zonealarm is running to try to keep the worms out until I can get the
server completely restored.
I've tried the following permutations:
Sharepoint trial download
This allows the restore to take place, but gives me errors. The
Sharepoint system is inaccessible.
Sharepoint retail package
Same as the trial.
Sharepoint retail with failed restore, SP3 put on top
The documents are accessible through the web folders in My Network
Places, but Internet Explorer gives me a "cannot find...". I figure
worst case scenario is I redo this restore and pull all of our
documents off, recreate the system, and put each document back on.
Not fun, but at least we'll lose minimal data.
The backup was created with msdmback. The backup size is about 1.5
gigs. The restore seems to go fine until the end, when the following
errors occur:
