it is, but the VPC's SPS is connected to SQL that's also on the VPC... everything contained in the VPC

Is the Database on the VPC? If not, keep trying as sometimes with Virtual PC it will time out connecting to an external SQL server (in fact I often have that problem).

I backed up a WSS site which was in the site collection of a portal (http://server/sites/wsssite1.
I restored the site into another domain (http://server2/sites/wsssite1) successfully. I immediately tried to import it again (http://server2/sites/wsssite2) to make a second copy of it on the target server (server2 is a VirtualPC and I'm trying to modify the site to reimport it into production).
The problem was when I went to import it the second time. I got the message about a content database not being available, but I had just added a site to it. I double checked and made sure that the content database hadn't reached its max on the number of sites. Any reason why SPS won't let me restore the site a second time?
