Yeah that's a bit screwy that you're not given the option to extend and
connect to existing config db. I'd try extending and creating a new db and
then go in and change the db once extended.

I'm not sure if the artivle below applies to what you've done but given the
ordering you should check it out.

Also, SPS and WSS should share the same app pool if they're running on the
same server.
