Restoring SPS 2003 Portal + sites to alternate server using only a SQL Backup

    (Sorry for the re-post - I originally posted this several levels down on a discussion and I think it had better be a separate issue)

    Hi. At our organisation we are looking at the usual backup/restore options - i.e. disaster recovery and/or document level restore capability.

    What we actually do at the moment is use Veritas BackupExec Agents to back up the files and system state on the SPS 2003 server, and use the SQL Agent on the backend SQL 2000 Server where all the content is stored.

    Am I right in thinking that in order to a complete resotre of the portal and all WSS sites contained within it, I can simply create a new server, with both SPS 2003 and SQL Server installed, restore the SQL databases, and then run the sharepoint 2003 installation routine, and 'point' it at the restored copies of the content/configuration database.

    All we are interested in is creating a restored mirror image of our portal - we can then grab whatever documents we need out of it and then copy them back into the main portal.

    Or do we in fact need to use the Sharepoint 2003 backup and restore tools?

    >From my point of view, it is actually better to restore to a copy rather than to the original portal, in case a user go things wrong and neds to check whether or not the file they were after is there.
