Unexpected Error after uploading custom workflow

Help- I have created a custom workflow on a document library to start
automatically when a document is uploaded. The workflow is based on
selections made to the custom properties of the document.
Unfortunately once a workflow instance is running you can no longer
edit the document properties or upload any new documents to the
library- you get an "unexpected error".
The workflow does seem to work fine though.
I found the article below but the solutions do not seem to work. I
am
trying to avoid installing the patches mentioned.

At this point even with the WF set to manually start, if the document
is running a workflow it won't let you edit the properties.
Thanks for any help.
