I am using Vista, trying to open an Asp.net web site on the same computer that has Visual Studio 2008 installed.
When I attempt to open the local IIS site, Visual Studio responds "Unable to open the web site "http://x.com". The web server dows not appear to have FrontPage Server Extensions installed."
It was in response to this error message that I found the patch to install the extensions (I provided the link below).
I can open the site as a file system type of web site, but not as a local IIS type site.

Hi Jrl,
From your description, you're encoutering some problem installing the FPSE
on a server machine correct?
As you mentioned at begining, you want to edit a website with Visual Studio
2008, what's the type of that site, is it a standard ASP.NET site or a
sharepoint site? Based on my understanding, Visual Studio 2008 can open
ASP.NET standard site without using Front Page Server extension. And for
sharepoint site, Visual studio is not the expected tool to author them, you
should use Sharepoint Designer to edit pages or site in sharepoint site.
As you also mentioned the following command:
owsadm.exe -o install -p 80 -w x.com
owsadm.exe is the admin tool for old sharepoint service versino 2003. Are
you using sharepoint portal server 2003? Also, is the operating system
windows vista or windows server 2008?
Sincerely,
Steven Cheng

Subject: installing frontpage server extensions
Date: Wed, 14 May 2008 20:39:17 -0700
I wanted to be able to edit a website on the same pc that has visual studio
2008 installed, and was led to install frontpage server extensions for IIS
7.0 (http://www.iis.net/downloads/default.aspx?tabid=34&g=6&i=1630). The
last step of this instalation requires that I use the owsadm.exe command
line, but I'm finding the documentation insufficient to complete the task.
In my case the IIS server is called server and it hosts a website (let's
call it
x.com). I thought the command should be
owsadm.exe -o install -p 80 -w x.com
but this results in the error: the server instance specified was not found.
Please specify the server's address and port.
In this case the ip address is 10.10.10.101 (since it is behind a router),
but I could not see where I would enter an option for the server name. No
option was listed for this at this reference:
http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/134/install-frontpage-server-extensions/
What would be the correct command line to complete the installation of the
frontpage extensions?
.
