Use Sharepoint or create seperate web site?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi,

I am new to using Sharepoint but my background is developing
applications with SQL Server and .NET C#.

A client is looking for a 'portal' that shows inventory but hides one
column (AVG COST) from certain people. I have created two views, one
with the column and one without, but I cannot stop everyone from
seeing both views...

He also wants to be able to search on specific columns instead of
whatever the default is. The default searching is a bit clunky. It
does not cache stuff very quickly and it doesn't seem to be very
accurate at finding items i.e. it does not seem to search one of our
columns which is a single line of text...

My development brain wants to leap right in and create a SQL DB and a
Visual Studio project and I can see how I would do this fairly easily.

But, I want to learn Sharepoint. So can Sharepoint do what I am
talking about above and by that I mean using either the standard web
interface or Sharepoint Designer 2007? I don't have Sharepoint Server
available, but I do have VS 2008 if needs be.

Thanks for your help

Tim
