RE: Doc collaboration, how to group-edit a document via only a bro

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Wei Lu –

Here’s our objective: We’re trying to use MOSS 2007 to help committees
collaborate on their policy documents and, ideally, we’d be able to do that
entirely from within a browser.

We’ve tried:

(a) Document check-in/check-out using MOSS 2007 and Office 2003. The
problem is that not all the committee members use Word and not all that do
use it proficiently (i.e., know how to use revision marks, etc.). In that
Word 2003/2007 is simply too complex for naïve users to employ effectively
that approach was less than optimal.

(b) We tried using the Wiki functionality. The technical-savvy members
thought it was OK (but not ideal), the rest simply did not like it.

(c) We tried the threaded discussion functionality. Folks would attach
documents representing their comments using the editing technology with which
they felt most comfortable, but consolidating all the comments and keeping
track of who was commenting on which version was difficult.

Hence my idea of seeing whether there was a way to basically simulate the
first option (i.e., document check-in/check-out and revision marks) using
simply a web browser. We require only the simplest of editing/revision-mark
functionality and I was hoping that the MOSS 2007 group had recognized that
tying collaboration to a complex program like Word was not always optimal and
had therefore thought of more straightforward ways of idea
exchange/collaboration.

Simply using the Basic Page as the document template doesn’t accomplish the
objective.

Is what we’re trying to accomplish seem straightforward? Are we looking at
the problem from the wrong perspective? Should we be trying alternative
approaches? Should we not be trying to use MOSS 2007 for this?

Thanks!
