Sorry for later response.

I consult the product team. They said that since the Business Data Catalog
is a Cusomized Column type in MOSS, it is not a core data type in WSS.

Site columns are only allowed to be out-of-box WSS types, not custom ones.
This is a limitation of the design of custom field types.

Product team also confirmed that they are doing some research to implement
in the Sharepoint O14.

You could send your feedback to the product team directly. They will
monitor and consider those request. Thank you!
