Search not working on custom templates?

All,

I've created a site from a custom site template in SharePoint 2.0. I've gone
through the process of creating a content index and scope on this site.
Although the index contains several documents, no search results are found
when I use this scope, no matter what I'm searching for.

Now, I can create a regular team site through the wizard, go through the
exact same process of creating a content index and scope and the searching
works fine. The only difference is that one site is created from a custom
template.

I'm pulling my hair out over this. Is there some special setting I'm not
seeing?
