The same way. It's just easier. Instead of accessing the WSS database you
can access the List directly . You avoid the need to find a suitable
database connection string which is often a (minor) problem when using this
when the site is on a different server.
Just try experimenting with FP 2003 and the Data menu item (Create a View or
is it Add a View) you'll find it's straightforward specifying the List in
the column that pops up on the right of the screen.

Turns out I lied- the two sites actually are on the same server, but
are separate sites. How do I access the list across sites?

The usual way to disply a list on another server is to create a Data View
Web Part using FP 2003 and have it access the database on the other
server.
(You could access the list if it was in a different site on the same
server)
This isn't really "writing" a web part - at least it's not complex.
But if that's no good to you, I don't have anything else to offer.
(Data View web parts can be filtered)

I have two servers running sharepoint sites. On one of them, I have a
large list of items that sub-sites filter according to a custom
attribute, and display the filtered results. I'd like to be able to
access this list from another server, and perform the same filtering
action to display the filtered list on a site on this second server.
Ideally, I'd like to accomplish this without needing to write a special
web part. Is it possible to display this remote list on a server other
than the one it's on?
