RE: Login Popup in Portal site

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

User receives a login prompt when trying to access a SharePoint site.

SYMPTOMS
When a user tries to access a SharePoint site that they have been granted
access to, the user will receive a login prompt.

CAUSE
This problem can occur if the Trusted Sites list in the user’s Internet
Explorer options does not include the following sites:
• *.INSERT YOUR PORTALS URL
• *. INSERT YOUR PORTALS URL

In addition, the Trusted Sites list might be set up correctly, but a setting
in the registry can nullify the use of the Trusted Sites list.

This problem can also occur if the user was prompted before, put in their
credentials and checked the box that says “Remember my password”, and then
changed their password afterwards.

In rare cases, this can also be caused by changing a custom security setting
for Trusted Sites.

RESOLUTION
First, check to see if the Trusted Sites list contains the domain of the
SharePoint site the user is trying to access. If not, have the user’s
Automation Specialist add the domain to the user’s Trusted Sites list.

The list can be checked in the registry at the following locations:
[HKEY_USERS\[User’s SID]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\YOURDOMAIN.com]
"*"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_USERS\[User’s SID]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\YOUR DOMAIN.net]
"*"=dword:00000002

Some clients may be using the local machine settings instead of the current
user settings, which might cause a problem. If it exists, remove the
“Security_HKLM_only “ value at the following location in the registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"Security_HKLM_only"=dword:00000001

If the domain is listed in the Trusted Sites list, then check for a stored
password by doing the following:
• Close all Internet Explorer windows and processes.
• As a local or domain admin, open the control panel.
• Open User Accounts
• Click on the Advanced tab
• Click the Manage Passwords button
If the domain of the SharePoint site in question is listed, remove it from
the list.

To check for a change to a custom security setting for Trusted Sites, do the
following after ensuring that *.your_url.com and *.your_url.net are in the
Trusted sites list:
• Open Internet Explorer Internet Options
• Click the security tab
• Click Trusted Sites
• Click Custom Level
• Scroll all the way to the bottom and check the User Authentication, User
Logon setting. Make sure “Automatic logon with current username and
password” is selected.
• Close all Internet Explorer windows and processes.

Hi

I have created a portal site with secure connection (https). While I
try to access the site from win2k machine and download a word doc I get a
Login Popup box asking for credentials. If I login through XP machine it
doen't ask for credentials while downloading the doc.

How to solve and disable the login popup from appearing on win2k machine?
Pl. provide some solution.

Thanks
