SharePoint backup fails

I am having problem with SharePoint backup and restore. I have about five
portals and when I try to back them up it fails everytime. I tried backingup
only databases it failed, all server farm components, Document libraries,
Team databases, and portal sites everything fails. Recently I have added
five more portals to original install, how can I add them into SharePoint
backup?
SharePoint original instance is the only one I can backup, everything else
fails.
