Hi Nicky,
If you are going to exclude some sites from searching, I'd suggest you can configure the portal for not searching these sites. Please see the article
"Managing Crawling of the Site Directory" in the SPS administrator guide. You can reject the crawling of these sites.
For the second question, I am not clear about the scenario you have met. It will be appreciated you send one screen shot for this scenario. This will
help me to narrow down this issue for you.
