Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

But you really ought to consider getting Windows 2000, just for
realibility
reasons :)

Yes, and for the sake of compatibility as well.
I don't think I want to spend that kind of money
at this point, though. MS is already in the process
of dropping 2000.

I am intrigued by this. What IP is in open source Linux that Microsoft is
claiming? The question was asked in response to the article you provide a
link to, but never answered.

I don't know what, if any, specific claim
there is. Someone in a VB group mentioned
Samba, but didn't go into detail. I've seen
the theory put forward that MS is preparing the
ground for a court case. I don't know enough
to assess that theory, but it seems to make
sense.

According to TheRegister today, I had my numbers
wrong. They say that MS actually paid $440 M
to Novell, rather than $350 M. Either way, $40 M
was also paid by Novell to MS as part of the
deal. That payment is to protect Suse users from
being sued by MS. So it appears that MS paid
a big bribe to Novell in exchange for Novell
taking the position that Suse has MS IP in it.

If MS really just wants to bring it to court and
mess up Linux as much as possible, that deal
gives them a place to start, regardless of whether
their claim is legitimate.

On the other hand, if Novell is "acknowledging"
MS IP in Suse by (technically) paying MS $40M,
then MS could also just bide their
time and then start coming up with Linux usage
fees somewhere down the road. ("Hey, you
already admitted that you're using our code.
We're just protecting our IP.")
