Re: Installing WSH on Vista

Why are you trying to replace VISTA system files with older "versions" ?

I think he's saying that he found the Vista
configuration was faulty and just wants to
set Registry settings. I was curious to see
whether someone answered this post.
I was wondering about permission issues,
though I can't think of anything along those
lines that would explain the problem.

On the other hand, is anyone actually planning
to use Vista? There seem to be many things
that recommend against it. (DRM, permissions
mess, excessive hardware requirements, built-in
WGA [now SPP] spyware, endless security nags,
problems with unsigned software, file and
Registry "virtualization" that promises no end of
headeaches, TPM, etc.) And the various analysts are
predicting a very slow rollout. (Over half of European
companies have no plans to move to Vista at all.)
Vista seems to be a sort of Frankenstein, halfway
between a locked-down game/shopping console
and a PC.
Does it even make sense to put time and effort into
supporting Vista?

Example: I write software for which I wrote HLP
files. Now MS is deliberately breaking HLP files
by not shipping the 300KB winhlp32.exe with
Vista. I could rewrite the help in CHM format,
but that would be quite a bit of work. I could wait
2 years until enough people may have Vista to make
a difference, and see what happens with SP1.
Or I could just explain to people that Vista is
broken and that they may be able to download the
fix if Microsoft hasn't changed their minds and
decided not to make winhlp32.exe available.
(As they've said previously that they will do.)
It's a tough call.

I might have to move to Linux earlier than I'd
planned, so that I can run Windows software.
The WSH runs fine on Linux. :)
