Please Help -Have Virus

My laptop computer has Windows XP and has had so many pop ups lately that I can't get any work done. I did a scan at http://www.pcpitstop.com tonight and it said that "the TRJ/DOWNLOADER.GK virus was found in file C:\WINDOWS\POLMX.EXE" btit did not explain how to remove the virus. I do not have any sort of anti-virus right now and could use advice on which one to get but for the moment I need someone to explain how to remove this virus. Please explain in very simple terms because I do not understand computer "talk". Thank you for any help, suggestions, advice, or ideas.
