As per the grateful advice given in reply to the origional
posting I have managed to make some progress... and eh..
open a further can of worms(forgive the pun).

I got rid of the corrupted hosts file and was able to
reactivate both windows and norton update. Both of these
have been updated. NAV managed to detect
W32.HLLWGAOBOT.GEN which was removed manually as the
removal tool on the Symantec website did not work even in
safe mode.

After cleaning this virus the host file was still being
corrupted so I ran the on site checkers from Symantec,
Trend Micro and McAfee.

Symantec nothing.

Trend Micro found DOS.ARGOBOT.GEN which was simply deleted.

McAfee found EXPLOIT-MIME.GEN, W32/GABOT.WORM.GEN.E,
W32/BUGBEAR.BLDATA, W32/NACHIT.FTPD. The last of these I
may have removed by following the instructions on the
Mcafee site. As for the first three I evidently will have
to purchase their virus checker to go any further.

Is this the best course of action or should I strip the
hard drive and start again?
