any development environment for script?

I purchased that MS "Windows 2000 Scripting Guide" and installed the guide,
but it is not an integrated development environment. For example, how would
I know to use "objFolder.Readable" or "objFolder.Hidden". One would hope
that a code expansion (or insight) would list the methods after typeing
"objFolder." and pausing.
As it is I looked up "enumerating folder properties" in the book index and
there was an example that showed the above. What if a property is missing
from the example? O.K. then I bring up the help guide and hunt.
FWIW, installing "scripten" from the cd right out of the book failed on XP
PRO+SP2 and I had to download the latest 5.6 build from microsoft before the
intall was permitted.
Is there an integrated development environment where i can put a script
together, test it and have methods and properties available as a code
insight? I am new to this scripting.
