Slow??? But length of either a string or an array *is* a "native way", and
they give you the character count and, when combined with split, the word
count.
That is:
charCount = foo.innerHTML.length;
wordCount = foo.innerHTML.split( /\s/ ).length + 1;
If that's too slow, I dunno what you can do better.
