Display Data in Client side

Hi

Is there any way to connect to a database driven by a client side
event (say' OnChange') and using say (client side) JavaScript? - I am
trying to write a forms system that populates fields when the user
select one item from drop down select option(I.e. he select his ID
number and on the 'onChange' event, the system will connect to the db
and return his details to the client script without having to reload/
refresh the whole page again - thus the net effect is: form fields
will be filled in, and the page will not have been
refreshed).

Please your help and support will be highly appreciated.
