The environment variables seem archaic for this.

For your clients using IE, you can use the Profile Assistant. It is designed
for that purpose. I am surprised that so few people use it, so most of your
clients won't have it set up, but you can add the option at least. I forget
the details of how to use it, but I did get it working. One place to look to
know what I am talking about is in the IE options. Look at the "Content" tab
for the "My Profile..." button. The label for it says "Microsoft Profile
Assistant stores your personal information.".

Something else you can do that is more obvious is to set up your form to use
"AutoComplete". I assume you know what that is. I think it is just a matter
of using names for the fields that are the same as most forms use.
