Please learn to quote and interleave your replies. It makes reading a lot simpler.
Randy said: *"So, you agree with me?"* No - not really, a cursory inquiry that produces a valid IP is of some value (What the intent of that is - is another question).
The key word in your statement is "valid IP" address. Any IP Address can be "valid" but it does not make it worthwhile or even reliable. I have a home network that has 5 PC's hooked to it. If any one of those 5 connect to a website, you get the IP Address of the Router, not of the PC.
Those that are not valid or are of proxies can be discarded based on the purpose of the inquiry.
And how do you propose to determine whether its a proxy or not?
Granted as the article said, the result this is not 100% guaranteed.
Precisely my point.
The OP never suggest what his purpose/intent was for acquiring IPs
from hits to his website.
As his original post mentioned nothing about security:
"Hi, how can I know the ip from the pc who is visiting mi page
Thanks"
I can't figure why you assumed it did.
I didn't. You brought a security issue into this discussion.
"But I fail to see how an IP address has *any* bearing on security as it doesn't unless you control both ends of the connection." As far as your assumption that *"I gave a correct answer." *, you gave an answer. Your assumption *"Perhaps it is you that has an ulterior motive in trying to convince someone they can do something that they can't reliably do?"*. I believe that the correct answer for this situation is determined by the OP.
You are welcome to your beliefs. But to try to convince someone that an IP Address is any good to them is giving bad advice. And that is on top of the fact that most servers log the IP Address to begin with so it makes determining it on the server once again ludicrous. The one exception to that would be sites like www.ipchicken.com that serve no purpose other than to tell you your IP Address.
Further, you should allow for other options and opinions.
I have no problem with other opinions. When those opinions have flaws in them, then it is *my* opinion that someone (me or otherwise) that has knowledge that the opinion has flaws then it should be pointed out. Even if for no other reason than the archives.
Seeing the OP's question from a business perspective, I would assume if the hits are from businesses with static IPs a culmination of such IPs would be a valuable tool for future business direct mailing. On the negative side, I suspect future spam is possible.
Now you are connecting IP Addresses to email, and they are *totally* irrelevant to one another. They are not even remotely related.
