Than make it hurt.
The only time I've ever written an app with spite in my heart was for a
survey request that was promised as a 15-20 question survey, but which
turned out to have 19 SECTIONS of questions (and 131 questions total). I
found out the true scope with just days to code (which included typing the
questions into the DB). I was so mad that I put it in one page, with no
validation (not much to validate -- 127 SELECT elements and the rest
TEXTAREA elements).
It worked great as long as the client machine had sufficient RAM. Not too
many web pages need that caveat. My boss now requires full disclosure from
the requestor up front before assigning a survey project.
Anyway, the client got less-than-useful data because of user frustrations. I
was able to put the blame directly where it belonged -- on the deceitful
request which forced a bad design. So my advice is to give them what they
demand** and let the chips fall where they may.
**You should let them know what their stubbornness forces them to give up,
of course.
