I do the same thing every day. My employer is a healthcare provider with
roughly 10,000 desktop PCs, all running Windows and all imaged with IE as
the only browser. We experienced an event last year in which a security
update disabled scripting (all users, all security settings, all zones) on
all Win2k machines not patched with SP4**. Every application requiring
scripting was DOA for the affected users.

It was a few days before we were able to determine that SP4 fixed the
problem, and in the interim, we were able to get many users on their feet by
installing Mozilla on their machines. But many users were left without
access to their applications because those applications (all purchased from
vendors, BTW) required IE.

In short, I don't buy the argument that you can predict your audience by
looking at today's audience. And if you have a VPN, then I say you haven't
even done a complete survey of today's audience. What happens when one of
your executives goes home and decides to get some work done over the VPN,
only to discover that your app is worthless to his Mac? Are you the guy who
has to field that phone call?

And don't get me started on IE and adware.

**You may be tempted to ask why we weren't already patched. We generally do
not apply patches until they are tested with the applications needed to
provide patient care. This event fell into the testing latency following the
release of SP4.
