Disk space usage

Whats the best practice for monitoring disk space and managing it
efficiently,
or what to look out for ?
(came in today to severe lack of diskspace - its a 700gig raid) (the data
folder is 279gig - also ive noticed a lot of LDF files
are bigger than the relevent MDF file)
