    David,
Thank you -- I have seen that and have been through all the steps (spent
literally hours messing with it). Am not using named pipes, and there
doesn't seem to be a port or firewall issue -- at least nothing that is
configurable. Have configured firewall to be off, and have even tried
disabling the firewall service entirely -- neither with any effect on the
problem. Am very frustrated with this issue.

I saw reports of this same problem on the internet, so I know that it isn't
unique to me -- but have not yet seen anybody report on being able to solve
this problem. This happens both with local data and with remote data.
Everything else can see the data (query analyzer, ado.net, ado, ole db,
odbc), but just not in the Enterprise Manager.

As a side note, I also have the .NET 1.1 framework SP2 installed. That
caused it's own set of problems as well - but that is for another post. I
don't think that it is related to this problem, but I am out of ideas.

If anyone has run across this problem and solved it -- please post the
    solution...

    -Tom
