Thanks for your replies.

I will look at your tips in the near future and let you know if it
solves my problem.

Maybe part of the problem is that the original source of the texts
converted to XML is coming from obscure text editors. I've seen
probleems with characters in texts coming from these editors before so
maybe I should look in the direction of good text conversion before
doing the XML stuff.
