This is much clearer to me now. The SQL 2005 OEM disks that came with the
[medical billing] software only installs their named instance; there's no
choice, and no way to specify a different instance if I install it again.
It could be that if you run the MSI:s from the command line that you
work around this. I don't know much about running setup from the command
line, but is described in Books Online.
If the install is really hardwired to this one instance name, this would
mean that you would need the media to install SQL 2005, even if you already
have the license. Unless, that is, the OEM installation is only
licensed to that single instance. That may be worth checking out.
I suppose I could have prevously installed SQL 2005 from some other
source, then install the OEM version and that would add their instance
to the one I had already. A posting on a forum (for the billing
software) said that if I want to do that (add the OEM named instance to
an existing SQL 2005 server) that I should shut down the SQL services
before starting the OEM SQL install. Would you agree with that?
There is no need to stop a running instance of SQL Server when you install
a second one.
