You would not being adding the named instance. Rather, you'd be placing the
database into an existing instance. In that case, you'd have to have the
service running for that instance.

Rick,
This is much clearer to me now. The SQL 2005 OEM disks that came with the
[medical billing] software only installs their named instance; there's no
choice, and no way to specify a different instance if I install it again. I
suppose I could have prevously installed SQL 2005 from some other source,
then install the OEM version and that would add their instance to the one I
had already. A posting on a forum (for the billing software) said that if I
want to do that (add the OEM named instance to an existing SQL 2005 server)
that I should shut down the SQL services before starting the OEM SQL
install.
Would you agree with that?

Or, if you are running SQL Server Express edition, run the install program
second time and name the new instance something other than the defaultname
(SQLExpress).Studio.
As an alternative, you can install another database (for use by another
program) onto the first instance. That you could do using Management
--rights.

I appologize for this simple question. However, i have a software that
installs a full version of SQL 2005 and its own named server instance.
However,i
want to add another server instance (for use by another program).
theI
can't figure out or find documentation how to add onther server using
SQL
Server Management Studio, and would appreciate advice. Thank you.
