If the 2005 instance is not an Express edition then it should be fine. You
can also use sqlcmd to issue the restore or attach commands as well.

It was not a MSDE db. It is full-fledged SQL Server 2000 db.

Can I use SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express to import a SQL
2000
database into a SQL 2005 database?
Is there any tool that will do this?
Can I get a FREE copy of SQL Server 2005 Management Studio (NOT
Express)
somwhere?
