Mangament studio hangs on db connection

I'm having a very wierd problem with Management studio.

Until today everything was working fine - I could connect to SQL
Servers from my WinXP box running management studio without any
trouble.

Today, when I try to log in the "connect to server" box just hangs.
The little orange and white progress indicator is moving across the
screen like always, but nothing happens. I've left it this way for 3
hours and had neither a successful connection or error message.
Clicking cancel doesn't seem to do anything.

What is bizarre is that everything is fine with the server I am trying
to connect to. I can use SQLCMD from my winXP box to connect without
trouble. The web apps that use the server are working fine, and other
machines are able to connect to it using management studio. It's just
this machine that is hanging.

I'm hoping to avoid the dreaded $250 phone call to Microsoft on this
one. Anybody seen this problem before?
