Mike,
8.00.2026 was a beta version of SP4. There were many complaints
about Query Analyzer not connecting to 2005 (originally an intentional
post-sp3a change), and the planned change (disable QA connections
to 2005) was undone for the release of SP4.
See http://www.aspfaq.com/sql2000builds.asp. You may need to
download the final SP4.

Weird. I have SP 4 installed, so I figured I'd reinstall. Still coming up 8.00.2026. Strange. Oh well....

Mike,
What version of SQL Server 2000 Query Analyzer are you using? Go to
Help | About ... and check the version. 8.00.2039 is the current version.
If I remember correctly, Query Analyzer did not work against 2005 at
some point before SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4. Maybe you need
to upgrade your 2000 installation.

Just tried it over here, wouldn't connect. I'm running SQL 2005 Standard with SP1 installed. Maybe they disabled this with SP1?

Yes. Query Analyzer connects to SQL Server 2005. I have not discovered any issues with this method.

I'm about to install and roll out SQL Server 2005.
One question that I have though: Can I still use Query Analyzer with SQL
Server 2005?
I really like how simple the interface is to do quick and dirty ad-hoc
queries. Also, assuming this will work, is there a version of Query Analyzer
that comes with SQL Server 2005 that I can contiue to install on my client
systems, or will I always need to keep a copy of SQL Server 2000 to install
from?
The Studio looks nice, but just a little overkill for some of simpiler tasks.
